Burera and Gicumbi districts celebrate environmental conservation with Umusambi Football tournament

The recent Umusambi Football Tournament, organized by the Rwanda Wildlife Conservation Association, concluded on Sunday, September 8th in Burera District, Northern Province. This event held following the successful Umusambi race over lastly weekend, aimed to promote grey crane conservation in the Rugezi wetland, home to a significant portion of Rwanda’s grey crane population.

The tournament brought together eight sectors from around Rugezi Wetland, fostering community spirit and environmental awareness through the sport of football.

Both men’s and women’s teams competed in a celebration of local talent and a call to action for wildlife preservation.

In the men’s final, Butaro sector emerged victorious, defeating Ruhunde sector 1-0. Ruhunde sector took second place, while Miyove sector secured third. In the women’s category, Gatebe sector claimed the top spot.

The winners received prizes of 500,000 Rwandan Francs for first place and 300,000 Francs for second place, underscoring the tournament’s dual focus on celebrating football and advancing conservation efforts.
