Remembering Mungo Jitiada: The football legend who shaped Rwandan talents has passed away today

Mungo Jitiada, widely revered in football circles as ‘Vigoureux,’ passed away today at 67 due to illness. Known for his remarkable ability to identify and nurture young football talent, Vigoureux has left an indelible mark on the sport, particularly in Rwanda’s Rubavu district famously dubbed the ‘Brazil’ of Rwandan football.

Vigoureux’s journey in football began as a player with Etincelle FC in his hometown of Rubavu. However, his legacy truly shines through his work as a coach.

Few Rwandan footballers from Rubavu have not benefited from his expertise. His impact on the district which has produced numerous top players, is profound. Today, it is almost impossible to find a Rwandan football team without at least one player who has been mentored by Vigoureux.

Throughout his career, Vigoureux coached many players who went on to achieve significant success both in Rwanda and internationally. Among those he trained are Haruna Niyonzima, a former captain of the Rwandan national team who has played in Tanzania and Libya. Djihadi Bizimana, current captain of the Amavubi and other notable players like Bizagwira Leandre, Radjab Bizumuremyi, Tuyisenge Jacques, Emery Bayisenge and others, it’s a longer list.

The news of Vigoureux’s passing has sent shockwaves through the Rwandan football community.

Tributes from various boards and football professionals have poured in, with many expressing their condolences and wishing peace for the coaching legend.

His contributions to football especially in nurturing young talent will be remembered fondly and his legacy will continue to influence the sport for years to come.
