Blood donors needed in Australia as reserves run down

Australian Red Cross Lifeblood has faced critical low reserves, hence, there is urgent call for blood and plasma donors in the state.

Demand for blood is exceptionally high, surpassing current donation levels.

Lifeblood say it requires 1,200 donors daily in the upcoming week to adequately support patients.

More than 600 blood and plasma donations are needed in Perth alone this week, which is the equivalent of about 90 donations per day.

The demand for blood and plasma, crucial for treating life-threatening conditions, including road trauma treatments, cancer care, and postpartum support for new mothers.

Cath Stone, Lifeblood’s Executive Director of Donor Experience says fewer than 3 per cent of the population donate blood regularly, yet more than 58 per cent are eligible to donate. That means there are about 10 million more people who could donate today, but don’t.

Lifeblood aims for blood donation to become a regular habit for a broader spectrum of Australians, rather than something undertaken only in times of urgent necessity.

Australians are urged to donate blood and plasma as just one donation could save up to three lives.
