Mugisha’s late winner seals Kiyovu SC’s comeback victory against AS Kigali
Desire Mugisha’s 77th-minute strike secured a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory for Kiyovu Sports Club over cross-town rivals AS Kigali in a rescheduled Rwanda Premier League Week 1 fixture on Wednesday, August 21.
Originally set for Friday, August 16, the match was postponed to Thursday, August 21, due to challenges faced by both teams that required intervention from the Rwanda Premier League board.
The action kicked off at 3:00 pm, with AS Kigali showing early dominance thanks to their newly acquired players. Their efforts were rewarded in the 15th minute when Hussein Shaban found the back of the net, putting AS Kigali ahead.
Kiyovu SC, playing at home and also fielding new signings, struggled to find their rhythm in the early stages.
As the first half progressed, Kiyovu SC began to find their footing. In the 44th minute, Hakim Dieme leveled the score with a well-taken goal from a difficult angle, ensuring the teams went into halftime tied at 1-1.
The second half was less eventful, with both teams displaying a lackluster performance. Despite numerous substitutions by both coaches, the match seemed destined for a draw. However, in the 77th minute, Desire Mugisha stepped up to deliver a brilliant goal, sealing the victory for Kiyovu SC.
The result was met with jubilation by Kiyovu SC fans, many of whom had doubted the team’s prospects due to various challenges faced before the start of the new season.
