Rwanda Energy Group (REG) has addressed the recent electricity disruptions that occurred on Monday, March 10, and Wednesday, March 12, 2025, affecting numerous customers across Rwanda, caused by vandalism of power line infrastructure on the interconnected transmission system.
In press release released on March 13, 2025, REG explained that the outages were a result of vandalism of power line infrastructure on the interconnected transmission system, which disrupted power exchange stability in the regional network.
“These disruptions were caused by vandalism of power line infrastructure on the interconnected transmission system, leading to challenges in maintaining power exchange stability in regional interconnected networks,” REG Management stated.
As Rwanda’s power grid is part of a shared regional network, the incident extended beyond national borders, impacting electricity supply in multiple areas.
REG assured customers that efforts are underway to restore normalcy, with repair works expected to be completed no later than March 17, 2025.
“While the line repair works are ongoing and expected to be completed not later than 17th March 2025, REG Management would like to assure our customers that necessary measures have been taken to prevent similar incidents,” the statement added.
In addition to fixing the damaged infrastructure, REG is implementing measures to enhance network security and prevent future acts of vandalism that could lead to similar disruptions.
