Former AFL player Barry Cable charged with sexual abuse

AFLfootballer Barry Cable has been charged with sexual abuse after he allegedly assaulted a young girl in the 1960’s.

The charges come following the investigation by Child Abuse Squad detectives into historic child sexual abuse allegations.

Cable, 80, was arrested on Friday and accused him of more sexual abuse.

Cable has been charged with five counts of indecent dealing and two of unlawful carnal knowledge, in 1967 and 1968, a statement released by WA Police said.

Cable would have been 24 at the time.

He is scheduled to appear in Perth Magistrates Court for the first time next week.

Cable started playing career in 1962 and he played for Perth, North Melbourne and East Perth in his career.

He played 319 games and scored 508 goals, he won VFL Premiership player twice, WANFL premiership player four times and other awards.

After retiring from game, he joined coaching career in 1972 where he coached Perth, East Perth and North Melbourne.

Cable is Considered one of the greatest rovers in the sport’s history.

Cable was added in the AFL Hall of Fame but he was removed after 25 years in 2023 after a judge found he sexually abused a Perth girl.

His former club North Melbourne has also removed Cable from its Hall of Fame.
