Good Friday is one of the most important days in the Christian calendar. It is the Friday before Easter Sunday and it marks the crucifixion of Jesus Christ [the execution of Jesus by being nailed to a cross]. On this day, Christians around the world remember the suffering and death of Jesus on the cross.
Although the name may sound strange, it is called Good Friday because it brought good news to humanity. It is the day when Jesus gave His life to save the world from sin.
The term “Good” in Good Friday does not mean happy or joyful in the usual sense. It comes from the old English word “Holy” or “God’s Friday.” Some believe it is called good because of the good outcome that followed.
Through Jesus’ sacrifice, Christians believe they were offered forgiveness and the hope of eternal life. His death was painful and full of sorrow, but it opened the door to salvation and peace with God.
The story of Good Friday is found in the Bible, especially in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. According to these scriptures, Jesus was betrayed by one of His disciples Judas Iscariot, arrested, falsely accused, and sentenced to death. (Matthew 26:14-38)
He was beaten, mocked, and forced to carry His cross to a hill called Golgotha, where He was crucified between two criminals. He died after hours of suffering, and the sky turned dark as the earth trembled.
Good Friday reminds Christians of the deep love Jesus showed by dying for others. It is a day of reflection, prayer, and mourning. Churches often hold special services, where the story of the crucifixion is read.
Many Christians fast or give up something they enjoy, to feel closer to the suffering of Jesus. The mood is quiet and serious, as people remember His pain and sacrifice.
Even though it is a day of sadness, Good Friday also brings a message of hope. Christians believe that Jesus did not remain in the tomb. On the third day, which is Easter Sunday, He rose again. This victory over death gives believers strength, faith, and the promise of new life.
It calls Christians to live in a way that honors what Jesus did—to forgive others, show kindness, and follow the path of peace.
