Former senior Facebook executive Sarah Wynn-Williams has made explosive allegations about the social media giant’s attempts to enter the Chinese market, revealing how the company reportedly worked closely with Chinese authorities to develop potential censorship tools. These revelations come to light through her newly released memoir, Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism, as well as a whistleblower complaint filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
In her memoir, Wynn-Williams details Facebook’s efforts to break into the lucrative Chinese market, which had been closed to the platform since 2009. According to her, CEO Mark Zuckerberg considered making significant concessions to Chinese authorities, including hiding viral posts until they could be reviewed by the government. The goal was to appease Beijing and gain access to hundreds of millions of potential users.
Meta, Facebook’s parent company, has acknowledged that it once explored entering the Chinese market but ultimately decided not to proceed. Referring to a 2019 statement by Zuckerberg, the company reiterated, “We could never come to agreement on what it would take for us to operate there, and they [China] never let us in.”
Wynn-Williams claims that the company was willing to compromise on fundamental values to expand its reach, raising ethical questions about Facebook’s decision-making processes at the time.
According to the New York Post, the memoir also accuses Joel Kaplan, Facebook’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, of sexual harassment. Wynn-Williams alleges that Kaplan created a hostile work environment through inappropriate comments and behavior. The accusations are part of a broader critique of Facebook’s internal culture, which she describes as toxic and unaccountable.
Meta has strongly denied the allegations, claiming that an internal investigation conducted in 2017 cleared Kaplan of any wrongdoing. The company stated that Wynn-Williams was fired due to “poor performance and toxic behavior.”
In addition to her revelations about China and workplace misconduct, Wynn-Williams filed a whistleblower complaint to the SEC, alleging that Meta misled investors about its internal culture and ethical standards. She contends that the company prioritized business ambitions over moral considerations, painting a troubling picture of Facebook’s corporate governance.
Vanity Fair reports that the complaint and memoir together aim to expose what Wynn-Williams describes as a culture of power and greed within one of the world’s most influential tech companies.
