On July 14, 2024, the Rwandan presidential and parliamentary elections took place, with Rwandans worldwide participating in the democratic process. In Brisbane, Australia, we had the opportunity to interview Ndizere Nestor, a member of the National Election Commission (NEC) overseeing the election process at the local polling station.

Preparation for the Elections

When asked about the preparations for the elections, Ndizere Nestor expressed his satisfaction with the process. “Yes, the preparation was good. All necessary materials and support from NEC were provided on time. Everything was well prepared,” he said, highlighting the efficient organization that ensured a smooth election day.

Opening of the Brisbane Polling Station

The Brisbane polling station opened its doors at 7 AM, as Ndizere Nestor confirmed. “The room was open, and everything was well set,” he stated, emphasizing the readiness of the venue to accommodate voters promptly.

Voter Turnout

One of the most remarkable aspects of the election day was the turnout of voters. “The turnout was extremely high, and the voters were very happy,” Ndizere Nestor reported. The enthusiasm and participation of the Rwandan community in Brisbane were evident, showcasing their commitment to the democratic process.

Participation of Young People and First-Time Voters

Ndizere Nestor also noted the significant presence of young people and first-time voters at the polling station. “First-time voters were many, and the number of young people was substantial, making up almost 45% of the voters,” he shared. This high level of engagement among the youth is a positive indicator of their involvement in shaping the future of Rwanda.

Challenges and Overall Experience

When asked about any challenges faced during the election process, Ndizere Nestor was pleased to report that everything went smoothly. “Everything was good and clear, and the process was smooth, good, and perfect,” he said. His positive assessment reflects the efficiency and effectiveness of the NEC’s preparations and execution.
