Rwanda is going to host the IRONMAN 70.3 Triathlon race for the third time. The race, which combines cycling, running, and swimming, will take place on August 4, 2024, in Rubavu District.

During a press conference held on Monday, July 8, 2024, the Ministry of Sports, Rubavu District, Rwanda Development Board [RDB], and Global Events Africa, the organizer of IRONMAN 70.3, announced the progress of the preparations for the competition.

Zephanie Niyonkuru, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Sport, expressed that this competition plays a role in the economy of the country, especially in sports.

He stated, “We use games to promote sports and attract tourists to visit our country. Last year, tourism revenue increased by 59% with $13 million in sports activities hosted by us. Additionally, the competition was successful because Rwandans emerged as winners.”

Bonita Mutoni, the Director of Global Events Africa, informed that this year’s competition will introduce a new feature with an exhibition.

She said, “We are well-prepared to host the tournament for the third time. This year, the exhibition will provide opportunities for business networking as it will be attended by many individuals interested in Rwandan ventures.”

Mbaraga Alex, the President of the Triathlon Association in Rwanda, stated that Rwandan athletes will begin their preparations soon and strive to excel in this competition once again.

The participants of IRONMAN 70.3 Rwanda will face a 1.9km swim course at the waterfront of Lake Kivu, a 90km bike course, and a multi-lap 21.1km run course along the shoreline of Lake Kivu.

The term “70.3” signifies the total distance in miles covered during the triathlon.

During the previous edition of the tournament, Rwandans performed admirably, and Ishimwe Héritier emerged as the champion.

The organizers of IRONMAN 70.3 Rwanda Triathlon addressed the press during the conference on July 8.
