The President of the Republic of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, on Friday, 14 February, arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he joins other Heads of State and Government from across the African continent for the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.

Upon arrival at Bole International Airport, the President was warmly welcomed by Ethiopia’s Minister of Tourism, Selamawit Kassa.

The 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union begins tomorrow.

The summit is being held under the theme, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations.”

The theme was decided upon by the Heads of State and Government at the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the AU, held in February 2023 in Addis Ababa.

The Assembly of Heads of State and Government is the AU’s supreme policy and decision-making organ. It comprises all Member State Heads of State and Government.

The Assembly determines the AU’s policies, establishes its priorities, adopts its annual program, and monitors the implementation of its policies and decisions.

In addition, the Assembly elects the Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), appoints the AUC Commissioners, and determines their functions and terms of office. It also admits new members to the AU, adopts the AU budget, and oversees other key matters.
