On Wednesday, October 2, in Latvia’s capital Riga, President Paul Kagame was received by Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs at the Riga Castle.
“They held tête-à-tête discussions before being joined by members of both delegations for bilateral discussions,” the office of the president posted on X.
On Tuesday, 01 October, President Paul Kagame began his three-day official visit to Latvia with a tour of the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia.
This is the first official visit by a Rwandan President to the Baltic States and the first official visit by an African President to Latvia.
During this visit, a memorial will be inaugurated at the National Library of Latvia (“The Castle of Light”) to honor the victims of the 1994 Genocide perpetrated against the Tutsi. This will be the first genocide memorial established in both the Baltic States and Eastern Europe.
Diplomatic relations between Rwanda and Latvia were established on April 10, 2007.
