On Wednesday, 24 July, Prime Minister Dr Edouard Ngirente officially inaugurated the first-ever milk powder plant in Rwanda.

This Milk Powder Plant, located in Nyagatare District, is completed and cost $45 million. It was built by Inyange Industries Ltd, which already processes soft drinks like milk, water, and fruit juices.

The facility, capable of processing 650,000 liters per day, will produce skimmed and whole milk powder, ghee, butter, and UHT products.

It has provided employment to 270 permanent workers and others in the chain of processing cattle products.

It is expected that it will collect milk from cattle farmers in the areas of Eastern Province including Nyagatare, Gatsibo, Kayonza, and Kirehe and Gicumbi in the Northern Province.

In Nyagatare District where this factory was built, the volume of milk has increased in the last 7 years from 4 million liters to 12 million liters per year.

In the entire country, milk production increased from 776 million liters in 2017 to more than one billion liters in 2024.

Eastern Province has more than 500 thousand cows, which produce more than 320 thousand liters of milk.

In Rwanda, there are more than 1.6 million cows.
