Raziska, President of Connect Huza Volunteers International with others youth volunteers supported successful Elections in Ottawa-Ganiteau

The Rwandan diaspora in Canada, Ottawa-Gatineau, demonstrated their strong civic engagement by participating in the presidential and deputy elections on 14 July 2024. Over 1,500 members of the community gathered at the voting site in Gatineau, where the atmosphere was festive and patriotic.

Razia Uwimana (Raziska), the President of Connect Huza Volunteers International, said, “This election is not just about casting a vote; it’s about reaffirming our commitment to democracy and the future of Rwanda. The participation of the diaspora in this process, even from abroad, underscores our strong bond with our homeland.”

Among the volunteers supporting the election organizers from the National Electoral Commission were many young volunteers, some of whom were voting for the first time. Razia expressed her pride and excitement to be among these volunteers. “Being part of this election as a volunteer is incredibly fulfilling. It’s not just a small contribution; it’s a powerful statement of our dedication to democratic processes and community involvement,” she said.

The vibrant scene at the voting site was marked by a palpable sense of unity. Razia praised the enthusiasm and dedication of the volunteers, noting, “The atmosphere here is electric. It’s heartwarming to see so many of our compatriots come together to support our nation. Our volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure the voting process was smooth and well-organized, reflecting our mission to empower Rwandans both at home and abroad.”

Razia Uwimana, the President of Connect Huza Volunteers International, which has recently expanded its operations to Rwanda, emphasized the organization’s commitment to fostering community engagement and democratic participation. “Our involvement in the election process here in Ottawa is a testament to our mission of empowering Rwandans, whether at home or abroad. We believe in the power of community and the importance of every voice being heard,” she stated.

Other young volunteers also shared their excitement about their roles. One young participant, voting for the first time, said, “Volunteering in this election has been an eye-opening experience. It feels great to contribute to such an important event.”

The successful turnout showcased the enduring bond the diaspora holds with their homeland and their collective commitment to contributing to Rwanda’s future.

Partial results from Rwanda’s presidential elections show Paul Kagame leading with 99.15% of the vote.

Opposition candidates Frank Habineza and Philippe Mpayimana have received 0.53% and 0.32% respectively.
