Zimbabwe has received 1000 metric tonnes of maize flour from Rwanda to assist in reducing the impact of the El Nino-induced drought.
Handing over the consignment in Harare on Thursday, Rwandan Ambassador to Zimbabwe, James Musoni, said Rwanda will continue to support Zimbabwe.
Ambassador Musoni stated that following the international call by His Excellency President ED Mnangagwa in April 2024 declaring a Nationwide State of Disaster, His Excellency President Paul Kagame heard it and immediately responded to the call by dispatching a consignment of 1000MT of maize to Zimbabwe.
He emphasized that Rwanda and Zimbabwe, under the spirit of Ubuntu, have heeded calls from each other during difficult times such as the Cyclone Idai Disaster that affected Zimbabwe in 2019 and the 2023 floods that affected Rwanda.
Minister of Local Government and Public Works of Zimbabwe, Daniel Garwe, who received the donation, expressed gratitude to the Government of Rwanda, lauding the core beliefs that President Paul Kagame and President Mnangagwa share as champions of African unity.
“This is the spirit of Ubuntu that Rwanda has demonstrated by responding to the international appeal by President Mnangagwa in the wake of the El Nino-induced drought. Zimbabwe will forever remember the generous donation. We will ensure that the donation reaches the deserving communities,” said Minister Garwe.
Harare and Kigali have strengthened ties through the signing of over 20 Memoranda of Understanding and agreements on cooperation in different sectors of the economy such as justice, energy, and education.
