Rwandans in Uganda Participate in Presidential and Parliamentary Elections at the Rwandan High Commission in Kampala

KAMPALA, UGANDA – On July 14, 2024, the Rwandan High Commission in Uganda was a hub of activity as hundreds of Rwandans living and working in Uganda gathered to participate in the presidential and parliamentary elections. The preparations for the event were exceptionally well-organized, ensuring a smooth voting process for all participants.

I had the privilege of being a full-day guest at the Rwandan High Commission in Kampala, witnessing firsthand the enthusiasm and commitment of the Rwandan diaspora in Uganda. From early in the morning, a significant number of voters lined up, eager to cast their ballots and contribute to the democratic process of their homeland.

The day began with long queues forming outside the High Commission as early as 7 AM. Despite the early hours, the atmosphere was filled with a sense of unity and purpose. Voters, young and old, stood patiently in line, demonstrating their dedication to shaping the future of Rwanda through their votes.

Among the notable figures who cast their votes was Mrs. Clare Akamanzi, the Former CEO of the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and the current CEO of the National Basketball Association (NBA) Africa. Her presence highlighted the significance of the elections and the commitment of prominent Rwandans to participate in the democratic process, regardless of their busy schedules and international responsibilities.

The High Commission’s staff worked diligently to ensure the voting process was efficient and secure. Booths were set up to facilitate a smooth flow of voters, and officials were on hand to assist with any queries or issues. The organization and coordination were commendable, reflecting the commitment of the High Commission to support its citizens abroad.

Throughout the day, the excitement and anticipation were palpable. Many voters expressed their pride in participating in the elections and their hopes for continued progress and development in Rwanda. Conversations among the voters often centered around the achievements of the current government and their aspirations for the future.

As the day progressed, the number of voters continued to swell, but the orderly manner in which the voting process was conducted ensured that everyone had the opportunity to cast their vote. The sense of community and solidarity among the Rwandans in Uganda was evident, with many taking the time to greet and converse with fellow countrymen and women.

The High Commission provided refreshments and facilities for the voters, ensuring their comfort throughout the day. This thoughtful gesture was greatly appreciated by the participants, many of whom had traveled considerable distances to take part in the elections.

By the end of the day, it was clear that the Rwandan High Commission in Kampala had successfully facilitated a significant turnout for the elections. The dedication and organization of the High Commission staff, coupled with the enthusiastic participation of the Rwandan community in Uganda, made the event a resounding success.

As the votes are counted and the results awaited, the Rwandans in Uganda can take pride in their active participation in the democratic process. The elections at the Rwandan High Commission in Kampala were a testament to the strength and unity of the Rwandan diaspora, and their commitment to contributing to the future of their nation.

The day concluded with a sense of accomplishment and hope, as Rwandans in Uganda eagerly anticipate the announcement of their new President and Members of Parliament. The high level of participation and the seamless execution of the voting process underscored the importance of the Rwandan High Commission’s role in supporting its citizens abroad and fostering a sense of national pride and unity.
