The Prime Minister, Dr. Edouard Ngirente, announced that in the last seven years, Rwanda’s budget has tripled from Rwf 1,900 billion in 2017 to over Rwf 5,000 billion in 2024.

The Prime Minister revealed this on June 5th when presenting the achievements of the National Strategy for Transformation (NST1) during a joint sitting of Parliament, a government program spanning from July 2017 to June 2024, entailing targets that the country had to achieve during that time.

The PM indicated that the increase in the budget was mainly based on the increase in domestic taxes, where the country’s income from taxes has doubled.

“The budget has continued to increase every year, from Rwf 1,900 billion to over Rwf 5,000 billion. It has tripled in seven years,” he said.

“The reason why we talk about the budget is that it is the money the government wants, gets it, and uses it for the country’s activities. As it increases, it shows that the activities done by the country have become more,” the Prime Minister added.

Dr. Ngirente said that this is a journey that the country should be proud of, and even the taxes coming from within the country have almost doubled, from Rwf 1,104 billion in 2017 to Rwf 2,616 billion in the fiscal year now.

During his address to the joint session of Parliament, Prime Minister Dr. Ngirente explained that the important activities planned in the National Strategy for Transformation (NST1) have been achieved at a satisfactory rate.

He expressed gratitude to the Members of Parliament for their effective collaboration with the Government and assured them that any areas where proper achievement was lacking would be addressed in the second phase of the National Strategy for Transformation (NST2).
