Belgium, a country accused of contributing to tensions in the Great Lakes region, has expressed satisfaction with the peace agreement recently signed between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), describing it as a courageous step toward peace. The statement was made by Belgium’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maxime Prévot, via a post on X, following the signing of the agreement. The peace agreement was signed in Washington, D.C., on Friday, June 27, 2025, by Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Olivier Nduhungirehe, and the DRC’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, in the presence of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.. The agreement aims to address longstanding issues of insecurity, conflict, and violence that have plagued eastern Congo for decades. Belgium, which once colonized both Rwanda and the DRC and has faced criticism for its historical and political involvement in the region, welcomed the development. Maxime Prévot commended both countries, stating “Congratulations to both neighboring countries for courageously choosing the path of peace.” He added, “Effective implementation of the commitments made is crucial to finally achieving lasting peace in the Great Lakes region.” In March 2025, Rwanda severed diplomatic ties with Belgium, accusing it of lobbying the international community to impose sanctions against Kigali. Rwanda has maintained that, although it is in conflict with the DRC, Belgium should refrain from actions that could worsen the situation and instead support peaceful resolutions.
