Eight candidates have officially launched their campaigns for Uganda’s presidency, ahead of elections scheduled for January 2026. The campaigns began on September 29, 2025, and will run until January 12, 2026. Among the contenders are some of Uganda’s most prominent political figures. Incumbent President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is standing again as the candidate of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). Other notable challengers include Mugisha Muntu of the Alliance for National Transformation, Robert Kyagulanyi known as Bobi Wine of the National Unity Platform (NUP), and Mubarak Munyagwa of the Common Man’s Party. On the first day, the NRM unveiled its manifesto, which will frame Museveni’s campaign. Bobi Wine, widely seen as Museveni’s strongest challenger, launched his campaign in Busoga in eastern Uganda, later moving to Jinja in the north. He previously won 35% of the vote in the 2021 election, while Museveni secured 58%. A popular musician before entering politics in 2017, he remains one of Uganda’s most recognizable opposition figures. Munyagwa began his campaign in Kampala, first praying at Bwaise Mosque and sharing a meal with supporters before holding his rally in Kawempe. President Museveni has been in power since 1986, when he overthrew Milton Obote’s government after a protracted armed struggle. He has led Uganda for nearly four decades and is seeking another term under the NRM. In the upcoming election, Museveni is widely expected to face his toughest competition from Bobi Wine.
