FERWAFA, in partnership with FIFA, has officially launched the FIFA Talent Development Scheme (TDS) Competition at Kamena Stadium. Speaking during the launch, Richard Mugisha highlighted how the programme will help create clear pathways for young footballers to grow and compete at higher levels. “Through the FIFA TDS programme, we are creating a structured pathway for young players to develop and reach higher levels of the game,” he said. The competition brings together 54 teams from across the country competing in four categories, namely U14 Girls, U14 Boys, U16 Girls and U16 Boys. The programme is part of Rwanda’s strategy to use the FIFA Talent Development Scheme to strengthen grassroots football structures and discover future stars who could eventually represent the country at higher levels.

To mark the official launch of the competition, three matches are scheduled today, featuring U14 Boys, U14 Girls and U16 Boys teams. The matches are expected to showcase some of the promising young talents emerging from different football development programmes around the country. The FIFA Talent Development Scheme is a global initiative by FIFA aimed at helping member associations improve youth development systems by identifying talented young players at an early stage and providing them with the right training environment, coaching and competitive opportunities. Through this programme, FERWAFA hopes to build a stronger football foundation by investing in youth development and ensuring that young players across Rwanda have access to structured pathways that can help them reach their full potential in the game. Football stakeholders believe that initiatives like the FIFA Talent Development Scheme will play a crucial role in shaping the future of Rwandan football by giving talented young players the platform they need to grow, compete and eventually shine on both regional and international stages.
