Kigali, Rwanda — Rwanda observes National Heroes Day on February 1, 2026, with President Paul Kagame leading tributes to citizens who made supreme sacrifices for the country. The day honors heroes across three categories: Imanzi, Imena, and Ingenzi.

Major General Fred Gisa Rwigema
Major General Fred Rwigema stands as Rwanda's supreme hero (Imanzi). Born in 1957, Rwigema fled to Uganda as a refugee following the 1959 pogroms. He mobilized Rwandans in exile toward the liberation struggle after peaceful repatriation efforts failed. On October 1, 1990, he launched the Rwanda Patriotic Army's campaign but was killed by enemy fire the next day. His sacrifice paved the way for Rwanda's liberation on July 4, 1994.

King Mutara-III-RUDAHIGWA
King Mutara III Rudahigwa, honored in the Imena category, transformed Rwanda during his reign from 1931 until his death. He abolished forced labor (akazi) and the feudal ubuhake system, promoted equality, and championed education by establishing schools and sending Rwandans to study abroad. His reforms laid foundations for social justice and unity.

Agatha Uwiringiyimana
Agathe Uwilingiyimana became Rwanda's first female Prime Minister in 1993. As Minister of Education, she fought discrimination and advocated for equal rights among students. She was assassinated on April 7, 1994, within hours of the genocide against Tutsi start, for her unwavering commitment to justice and unity.

The Nyange Secondary School students
The Nyange Secondary School students are also honored in the Imena category. In 1997, during a rebel attack, these students refused to separate along ethnic lines and stood together, with some paying the ultimate price for their unity.
Ceremonies across Rwanda include wreath-laying at the National Heroes Mausoleum and discussions encouraging youth to emulate these examples of courage and sacrifice.
