Rwandans in New Zealand, along with their friends, observed the 31st commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Auckland, a major metropolitan city on New Zealand's North Island, on May 3. The commemoration ceremony brought together Rwandans living in various New Zealand cities, including Auckland, Wellington, and Hamilton. The event was held at the Hyundai Marine Sports Center in Auckland. Rwandans were joined by several dignitaries, including the Rwandan Honorary Consul General to New Zealand, members of parliament, a representative from the Air Force, and other friends of Rwanda. Speakers at the event reflected on the ongoing fight against genocide denial and trivialization, post-genocide recovery efforts, and the importance of unity and reconciliation. Sangwa Eric, Chairperson of the Rwandan Community in New Zealand, emphasized in his remarks that remembrance, self-reconstruction, and the fight against genocide ideology are crucial. He encouraged young Rwandans in New Zealand to use this period to educate their peers from other countries about Rwanda’s history. He stressed that Rwandans must always declare, "Never again to genocide."

Clare de Laure, Rwanda's Honorary Consul General to New Zealand, reminded the audience that Rwanda will never accept genocide denial or minimization. She added that the path Rwanda has chosen of unity and reconciliation is irreversible and essential for sustainable development. “If we all rise and work together, we will prevail,” she said. Since April 7, 2025, Rwanda has been observing the 31st commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Rwandans and friends of Rwanda around the world will continue to organize commemoration activities until July 4
