President Paul Kagame, on Friday, January 10, received a message from his Zambian counterpart, Hakainde Hichilema. The message was delivered by Ambassador Lazarous Kapambwe, Special Envoy, on behalf of President Hichilema, according to Village Urugwiro. Rwanda has a strong partnership with Zambia. In recent years, during President Kagame’s State Visit to Zambia in 2022, seven Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) were signed. These included agreements on trade and investment, agriculture, fisheries and livestock development, immigration matters, as well as cooperation between the Rwanda Development Board and the Zambia Development Agency. Additionally, a Cooperation in Taxation Agreement was also established. The signing of these agreements highlights the robust bilateral cooperation between Rwanda and Zambia. President Hichilema made his first state visit to Rwanda at the invitation of President Kagame, as a reciprocal visit following President Kagame's state visit to Zambia in April 2022. During the two-day state visit, President Kagame and President Hichilema, together with their delegations, held a working session on bilateral cooperation aimed at benefiting the people of both countries. They discussed key sectors of partnership, including trade, the extradition of fugitives from the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, agricultural production in Zambia on land allocated to Rwanda by the Zambian government, and opportunities for knowledge exchange between the two nations. Rwanda and Zambia have also engaged in high-level consultations on issues of mutual importance, including within the United Nations and the African Union. The growth of bilateral ties is further demonstrated by the established Joint Permanent Commission of Cooperation, which spans various sectors.
