On May 26, Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Olivier Nduhungirehe, met with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, Murat Nurtleu, in Astana. The two ministers discussed a broad range of issues, including political, economic, cultural, and humanitarian cooperation. “We view Rwanda as a friendly country and vital partner in Africa. I am confident that our joint efforts will ensure a successful visit of President Kagame, that will mark the beginning of a new chapter in Kazakh-Rwandan relations”, stated Minister Nurtleu. The discussions focused on key areas such as trade, logistics, the defense industry, and digitalization. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the legal framework and promoting reciprocal visits at various levels. Given Kazakhstan’s progress in e-Government systems and Rwanda’s Smart Rwanda Initiative, both parties explored opportunities for collaboration in the IT sector, particularly through the Astana Hub—Central Asia’s largest tech park. They also exchanged views on current regional and global issues and agreed to maintain active communication between their foreign ministries. Following the meeting, both parties emphasized the importance of strengthening their partnership and confirmed their commitment to implementing the agreements reached. Diplomatic relations between Kazakhstan and Rwanda were established in 2012. In June 2023, the two countries explored opportunities for trade, economic, and investment cooperation. According to Rwanda’s Embassy in Türkiye, which is also accredited to Kazakhstan, consultations between the two nations are ongoing. Several bilateral agreements and memoranda of understanding are under discussion at both embassy and ministerial levels, aimed at establishing legal frameworks for cooperation in public and private sectors. In December 2024, President Kagame met with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan on the sidelines of COP29. They discussed ways to enhance economic cooperation for the mutual benefit of their countries.
