Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Amb. Olivier Nduhungirehe, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, Jan Lipavský, discussed further strengthening bilateral ties. The two ministers held discussions on Thursday, March 6, via telephone. They also addressed the situation in eastern DRC. Rwanda and the Czech Republic have cultivated a dynamic and multifaceted relationship, marked by high-level exchanges and significant agreements across various sectors. In May 2023, Rwanda and the Czech Republic finalized a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement, aimed at boosting trade and investment by preventing tax evasion and eliminating double taxation. This agreement came into effect on October 30, 2024, with its provisions applicable from January 1, 2025. Additionally, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Rwandan Ministry of Health and the Czech Republic to enhance healthcare collaboration. This partnership focuses on specialized care, training, infrastructure development, and medical equipment provision. On April 6, 2024, President Paul Kagame received President Petr Pavel of the Czech Republic. The two leaders, along with their respective delegations, held a bilateral meeting to discuss ways to deepen existing ties for the benefit of both nations, which share a common history of overcoming a difficult past. President Pavel was in Rwanda for a three-day state visit and participated in activities commemorating 30 years after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. During their discussions, the two Heads of State explored the next steps in furthering bilateral cooperation in key areas of mutual interest, including defense and security, health, trade and investment, and technology. At a joint press conference, President Kagame said that the Czech Republic was among the first countries to alert the International Community that what was happening in Rwanda in 1994 was a Genocide -something he said Rwanda will forever be grateful for.
