Rwanda’s national men’s handball team made a confident and commanding start to the 27th African Men’s Handball Championship, defeating Zambia 30–19 in their opening match at BK Arena on Wednesday, January 21, 2026. Hosting the tournament for the first time, Rwanda set the tone for their campaign in front of an enthusiastic home crowd, following the official opening ceremony attended by Minister of Sports Nelly Mukazayire, African Handball Confederation President Dr. Mansourou Aremou, and Rwanda Handball Federation President Alfred Twahirwa. From the opening whistle, the Rwandan side imposed their rhythm with sharp attacking plays and disciplined defense, leaving Zambia struggling to find scoring opportunities. By halftime, Rwanda had built a comfortable lead of 17–8. In the second half, the hosts maintained intensity, controlled the game tempo, and sealed a convincing 30–19 victory. Kayijamahe Yves was the standout performer, scoring 10 goals, while Nshimiyimana Alexis and Rwamanywa Viateur contributed five goals each. This strong start sets Rwanda up well for their next Group A match against Algeria, scheduled for Thursday, January 22, at 7:00 PM local time at BK Arena, after Algeria narrowly defeated Nigeria 25–23. Elsewhere in the championship, high-scoring games highlighted the competitive field: Angola beat Uganda 37–21, Egypt defeated Gabon 36–25, Guinea overcame Kenya 36–27, Tunisia defeated Cameroon 41–22, Morocco dominated Benin 52–28, and Cape Verde won 34–28 against Congo. The championship, which also serves as a qualifier for the IHF Men’s Handball World Championship, promises thrilling matches as teams compete for continental glory and the chance to represent Africa on the world stage. Rwanda’s dominant opener has already signaled their intentions to contend for the title.
