The National Public Prosecution Authority of Rwanda, on Friday, August 8, received genocide suspect François Gasana, also known as Franky Dusabe, following his extradition from Norway. According to the National Public Prosecution Authority, Gasana was convicted in 2007 by the Nyange Gacaca Court and sentenced to 19 years in prison for his role in the crime of genocide. "During the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, Mr. GASANA lived in Western Province, NGORORERO District, in NDARO Sector. He was a student at SAVE Secondary school," the National Prosecution said in the statement. Gasana was arrested in October 2022 in Oslo by Norway’s Criminal Investigations Division (Kripos), following a prolonged investigation into his role in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. In September 2023, the Oslo District Court ruled that Gasana could be extradited to Rwanda. He appealed the decision, but in April 2024, the Court of Appeal upheld the ruling. Undeterred, Gasana took the case to the Norwegian Supreme Court in June 2024, but the highest court also upheld the lower court’s decision. The National Public Prosecution Authority commends the Kingdom of Norway’s judicial authorities for extraditing genocide fugitives, for their continued cooperation in matters of mutual legal assistance, and for their contribution to the global effort to fight impunity.
