A powerful heatwave originating over northwest Africa is advancing into Europe, bringing dangerous temperatures and sleepless nights to millions across the continent in the coming days. According to the UK Met Office, the extreme heat currently gripping the Iberian Peninsula will continue to intensify as it spreads northeastward over the next four to five days. “A heatwave over northwest Africa and Iberia will spread further northeast, bringing temperatures well above average for Portugal, Spain, France, Switzerland, Belgium and other parts of Europe,” said Met Office spokesperson Stephen Dixon. “This will reach places like France and Germany later in the week.” Inland regions of Spain and Portugal are expected to endure the most severe conditions, with daytime highs reaching into the 40°C range and overnight lows stubbornly remaining above 20°C. The heat is being fuelled by a persistent high-pressure system combined with successive days of clear skies, trapping warmth well above seasonal norms. “This combination is allowing temperatures to rise to well above average for these locations, even for the time of year,” Dixon added. Authorities across southern and western Europe are warning of increased health risks, particularly for older adults, young children, and individuals with underlying health conditions. Public advisories urge residents and tourists to stay hydrated, avoid physical exertion during peak heat hours, and check on vulnerable neighbours. The sweltering conditions are also raising fears of wildfires, especially in the drought-stricken landscapes of Spain, Portugal, and southern France. Emergency services in several countries have heightened their readiness as the threat of rapid fire spread grows. Climate scientists note that such extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and intense, a trend consistent with the impacts of global climate change. For Europe, the latest heatwave is another stark reminder of the continent’s increasing vulnerability to extreme summer temperatures. Source: UK Met Office
