Starting 1 June 2025, transgender women will no longer be allowed to play in women’s football in England. The Football Association (FA) made this decision after a recent change in UK law. The FA had recently updated its rules on 11 April. These rules allowed transgender women to play if they could show medical proof that their testosterone levels were low for at least a year and that they were on hormone treatment. Each case would also be reviewed by the FA, including a “match observation.” But everything changed on 15 April when the UK Supreme Court ruled that the legal meaning of “woman” is now based on biological sex, not gender identity. In response, the FA said: “This is a complex subject, and our position has always been that if there was a material change in law, science, or how the policy was working, then we would review it and change it if necessary.” Now, only people who were born female will be allowed to play in women’s football at any level. The FA added, “We understand that this will be difficult for people who simply want to play the game they love in the gender by which they identify. We are contacting the registered transgender women currently playing to explain the changes and how they can continue to stay involved in the game.” Fiona McAnena, from the human rights group 'Sex Matters', supported the new rule. She said, “This decision is overdue. The previous policy was nonsensical.” According to BBC Sport, the Scottish FA is also planning to bring in the same rule for football in Scotland.
