United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an immediate end to hostilities in Sudan, where thousands continue to die in the ongoing war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). In a post on X on Tuesday, November 4, Guterres urged both sides to allow the safe, rapid, and unrestricted delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in need. He also appealed for an end to the flow of weapons and foreign fighters into the country. “I call on the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces to come to the negotiating table and bring an end to this nightmare of violence — now,” Guterres wrote. The conflict began in April 2023, when tensions between the army and the RSF escalated into open fighting. The RSF, initially formed for internal security and counter-insurgency operations, particularly in Darfur, clashed with the army over plans to integrate the two forces, as well as over control of political and economic power following the ousting of former leader Omar al-Bashir. The war has since spread beyond the capital, Khartoum, into western and southern regions, with the RSF seizing much of Darfur from government forces. The human toll has been devastating: tens of thousands have been killed, and more than 13 million people displaced, according to UN estimates. Reports from the city of Al-Fashir in North Darfur describe atrocities by paramilitary forces, including executions and mass killings. The International Criminal Court has launched investigations into alleged war crimes, including murder and sexual violence. The humanitarian situation remains catastrophic. Famine threatens parts of Darfur and Kordofan, disease outbreaks are rising, and much of Sudan’s health and infrastructure systems have collapsed under the strain of war.
