In a recent statement, UK Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick expressed “confidence” in the initiation of deportation flights to Rwanda before the upcoming general election.
The announcement follows a setback in the Supreme Court last month, prompting Home Secretary James Cleverly to travel to Rwanda and sign a revised treaty with the central African nation.
Jenrick outlined the strategy, stating, “The treaty that the Home Secretary is going to sign…will create a fundamentally different and better arrangement with the government of Rwanda.” He emphasized the necessity of emergency legislation to embed the treaty into UK law and address loopholes contributing to spurious claims, preventing migrants from being deported.
“This is a plan that is critical to getting numbers down,” Jenrick asserted, highlighting the government’s commitment to taking additional measures to curb net migration if required.
