What to Know About Donald Trump’s Inauguration Ceremony

Today, January 20, 2025, Washington, D.C., will witness a historic event as Donald Trump is set to be inaugurated as the President of the United States for a second, non-consecutive term.

After weeks of preparation, the day’s events are ready, though some last-minute adjustments were made after Friday’s announcement that an icy cold front moving into the D.C. area would shift the ceremonies indoors.

“The weather forecast for Washington, D.C., with the wind chill factor, could bring temperatures to severe record lows. I don’t want to see people hurt or injured in any way,” the president-elect said in a statement on Friday. “Therefore, I have ordered the Inauguration Address, along with prayers and other speeches, to be delivered in the United States Capitol Rotunda, as was done by Ronald Reagan in 1985.”

Despite the unpleasant weather and venue changes, the day’s key events will proceed as planned, including performances by prominent acts like Carrie Underwood. The presidential parade, however, has been moved to Capital One Arena.

The inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump coincides with Martin Luther King Jr. Day this year. Here’s the schedule of events:
8 a.m. ET
The inauguration ceremony will begin with a non-partisan service at St. John’s Episcopal Church in downtown D.C. Following this, Donald and Melania Trump will head to the White House for tea with President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden. Traditionally, the sitting president escorts the incoming president to the Capitol.

10 a.m. ET
Official guests will start arriving.
12 p.m. ET
In accordance with the Constitution, which mandates the transfer of power at noon on January 20, Trump will take the presidential oath during the swearing-in ceremony. He will also deliver his inaugural address at this time.

Shortly after the swearing-in:
The outgoing president and vice president will bid farewell in a ceremonial departure, typically by helicopter.

Following this, the president will participate in a signing ceremony in the president’s room off the Senate chamber. This is when initial nominations, memorandums, proclamations, or executive orders are signed, accompanied by aides and members of Congress.

Next is the JCCIC congressional luncheon at the Capitol’s Statuary Hall, attended by the president, vice president, their guests, and Senate leaders.

After lunch, the president and vice president will head to the east front steps of the Capitol for the president’s review of the military troops.

3 p.m. ET
The presidential parade will commence. Originally planned for Pennsylvania Avenue, it has been relocated to Capital One Arena due to the cold weather. The parade will feature ceremonial military regiments, citizen groups, marching bands, and floats.

After the parade, Trump will return to the White House for the Oval Office signing ceremony, where he will perform an inaugural signing.

Finally, Trump will attend and deliver remarks at three inaugural balls: the Commander in Chief Ball, the Liberty Inaugural Ball, and the Starlight Ball.
