Burera district unites for grey Crane conservation through Umusambi football tournament

In a strong show of community spirit and conservation, the Rwanda Wildlife Conservation Association has organized the “Umusambi Football Tournament” in Burera District, Northern Province. The competition held after the successful Umusambi race over the weekend, brings together all sectors of the district in a bid to promote grey crane conservation efforts in the Rugezi wetland which houses a quarter of Rwanda’s grey crane population.

The tournament has ignited a sense of pride and unity within the district, with both men and women teams competing in the final stages. This grassroots football initiative aims not only to celebrate the local talent but also to raise awareness about the importance of preserving the environment and wildlife, particularly the endangered grey cranes.
