Celebrating Umuganura and Kwibohora: A Day of Unity, Gratitude, and Reflection for the Rwandan Community in Queensland

On August 31st, the Rwandan community in Queensland, along with Friends of Rwanda, came together to celebrate Umuganura, the traditional Rwandan harvest festival, and Kwibohora, commemorating the liberation of Rwanda. The event was a resounding success, drawing over a hundred participants, including young Rwandan artists who showcased their talents during this magnificent ceremony.

Among the esteemed speakers at the event was Mr. Ndamage Nathan, who delivered an inspiring speech about the significance of Umuganura. He emphasized the importance of unity, sharing the harvest, and resilience, noting how these values have been the cornerstone of Rwanda’s recovery and development over the years.

Patricia Bamurangiwa, another key speaker, spoke passionately about Kwibohora, expressing her deep gratitude to the young members of the Rwandan Patriotic Army (RPA) Inkotanyi, who bravely halted the genocide against the Tutsi 30 years ago. She extended her thanks to the visionary leadership of President Paul Kagame and all members of the RPF Inkotanyi, acknowledging their pivotal role in liberating the country and fostering unity, reconciliation, resilience, economic growth, strong international relations, and peacekeeping efforts, which have earned Rwanda great respect on the global stage.

Murindangabo Renatus, the Chairperson of the Rwandan Community Abroad in Queensland, also shared his remarks. He began by expressing heartfelt thanks to all members of the Rwandan community and Friends of Rwanda for their continued support and participation. He discussed the positive aspects of Umuganura and Kwibohora, highlighting how these traditions reinforce the values of unity and resilience within the community. Renatus also extended his gratitude to the Australian government for recognizing and valuing the Rwandan community, providing them with a platform to celebrate their heritage. He thanked the Rwandan government and the RPF Inkotanyi for their unwavering commitment to rebuilding Rwanda after the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, transforming the country into a beacon of hope and progress.

This event was proudly sponsored by members of the Rwandan community, alongside other contributors who own businesses and companies. Their generous support made this celebration possible, ensuring the continuation of cultural traditions and the strengthening of bonds within the community.

The event was a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of the Rwandan people, both in Rwanda and abroad. It underscored the importance of remembering the past, celebrating progress, and looking forward to a future filled with hope, unity, and continued growth.
