For the first time, a Memorial of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi is set to be inaugurated in Australia, becoming the first ever in the Asia-Pacific region.

The inauguration ceremony is scheduled on Saturday, 11th May, 2024, when the Rwandan Community in Perth, Western Australia, will gather for the 30th Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The Genocide memorial is an inspiration of the Rwandan Community Perth Inc (RCAP), an association of Rwandans living in Western Australia.

In a statement, RCAP said the memorial holds immense emotional significance for the Rwandan community in Australia, many of whom find it difficult to travel to Rwanda annually to honor their loved ones.

“The commemoration and unveiling ceremony will be a moment of reflection, remembrance, and renewal as we come together as a community to honour the memory of those who perished and reaffirm our commitment to never again”, RCAP said on social media.

So far abroad of Rwanda, there are more than 21 Genocide memorials sites in different countries including Europe, Asia, America, and Africa.

These memorial sites help Rwandans living abroad to find a good place to go to remember and pay tribute to the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

It is also used to teach the history of Genocide so that the world can put in place measures that will ensure that no more Genocide will happen again.
