The Rwanda National Police, RNP, revealed that a man was arrested on Thursday, May 2, at Rwamagana Automobile Inspection Centre for allegedly attempting to bribe an officer in order to obtain a vehicle inspection certificate.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Hamdun Twizeyimana, the Police spokesperson for the Eastern region, stated that the vehicle had failed the gas emissions test when the owner tried to offer a bribe of Frw100,000 to the inspecting officer, as reported by RNP.

“The vehicle was emitting gas and the owner was instructed to have it repaired, but instead he attempted to bribe the officer with Frw100,000 to alter the inspection results and issue a mechanical inspection certificate for the vehicle.

The officer promptly reported the incident to his superior, leading to the arrest of the suspect in the act, who was then handed over to RIB at Kigabiro station,” SP Twizeyimana explained.

He cautioned against such criminal behavior, emphasizing its negative impact on the environment and public health.

According to article 4 of the Law on Fighting Against Corruption, anyone who offers, solicits, accepts, or receives an illegal benefit for themselves or another person in exchange for a service commits an offense.

Upon conviction, the offender may face imprisonment for a period exceeding five years but not exceeding seven years, along with a fine of three to five times the value of the illegal benefit received or solicited.
