Oldest bank in WA will close all branches to operate only digitally

All the branches of Western Australia’s oldest bank Bankwest will be shut down to only operate digitally. Commonwealth bank announced.

Total of 60 branches of Bankwest will be closed by the end of the year and 350 staff will be affected. 

15 of the closed branches will be turned into Commonwealth Bank branches – Owns Bankwest- and the staff will be offered other jobs in company. Other 45 branches will be closed. 

Closure of the branches to move to digital-only operating system’s decision has been defended by the bank saying 97 per cent of transactions were done online.

Bankwest personal banking manager Scott Spittles said that as part of Bankwest’s transition to a digital bank they will no longer operate a physical branch footprint. 9News reported.

Bankwest has been operating for 130 years.
