The endorsement came during a summit in Tonga on Wednesday, where leaders of the Pacific Island Forum (PIF) convened to discuss various regional challenges, including security, climate change, and economic development.
The plan, valued at 400 million Australian dollars (approximately $271 million USD), was proposed by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The initiative aims to strengthen the capacity of Pacific Island nations to respond to security challenges through improved training and the establishment of a multinational crisis reaction force.
The regional policing plan is designed to address the growing security concerns in the Pacific, where countries are increasingly vulnerable to external threats, including transnational crime, natural disasters, and geopolitical tensions. The plan includes extensive training programs for law enforcement agencies across the Pacific Island states, aiming to enhance their capabilities in dealing with a wide range of security issues.
