On Tuesday, August 27, at Urugwiro Village, President Paul Kagame met with Anibal Manave, FIBA Africa President, Alphonse Bilé, FIBA Africa Secretary-General, Clare Akamanzi, NBA Africa CEO, and Amadou Gallo Fall, Basketball Africa League (BAL) President, following the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup pre-qualifiers.

“They discussed the importance of supporting women in sports and opportunities to further develop women’s basketball on the continent,” a tweet from President’s Office revealed.

Rwanda has been at the forefront of promoting basketball in Africa, particularly through its partnership with the Basketball Africa League.

Rwanda continues to carry out activities aimed at promoting basketball, including the construction of new and modern stadiums such as the BK Arena and the LDK stadium.

In May 2021, Rwanda signed an agreement to host the Basketball African League final games, BAL.

In 2023, the Government of Rwanda, through the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and the Basketball African League (BAL), extended the cooperation agreement until 2028.

This 5-year extension allows Rwanda to host the qualification games in 2025 and 2027 and the finals in 2024, 2026, and 2028.

Under this agreement, Rwanda is also allowed to host other activities organized by BAL.

The BAL, in particular, has provided a platform for African players to showcase their talents and has brought renewed energy to the sport across the region.
