Rwanda, Brazil Discuss Enhancing Cooperation in Defence-related Matters

Officials from Rwanda and Brazil held discussions focused on enhancing cooperation between the two countries in defence-related matters.

This meeting took place on Wednesday, August 28, when Brigadier General Célestin Kanyamahanga, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence of Rwanda, along with Rwandan Ambassador to Brazil, Lawrence Manzi, were welcomed by Major General Jose Ricardo Meneses Rocha, the Deputy Chief of Strategic Affairs in the Ministry of Defence of Brazil.

“Their discussions focused on enhancing cooperation between the two countries in defence-related matters,” a tweet from the Ministry of Defence of Rwanda revealed.

In December 2023, Lawrence Manzi was appointed Ambassador of Rwanda to Brazil, becoming the first Ambassador from Rwanda to that country.

On May 22, 2024, he presented his Letters of Credence to Lula da Silva, President of the Federative Republic of Brazil.

Diplomatic cooperation between Rwanda and Brazil began in 1981. In 2019, the two countries signed an agreement to cooperate in air travel known as the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA).

Starting in 2022, Rwanda began importing wheat from Brazil after its imports from Ukraine decreased. It also imports a significant amount of sugar from Brazil.

In October 2023, former Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Vincent Biruta, visited Brazil to strengthen the relationship between the two countries.
