The Plenary Sitting of the Rwanda Senate passed the law approving the ratification of the agreement between the Government of the Republic of Rwanda and the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland for the provision of an asylum partnership to strengthen shared international commitments
on the protection of refugees and migrants, signed at Kigali on 5th December 2023.
“The promulgation is the next step” Rwanda Parliament said in the statement.
In April 2022, Rwanda and United Kingdom signed a deal to facilitate the dispatch of some migrants who arrive in the UK across the English Channel to Rwanda, where their asylum claims would be processed.
The Rwanda/UK Migration and Economic Development Partnership (MEDP) is a bold new approach to deter the dangerous migration journeys causing untold suffering while addressing the global imbalance of economic opportunity, which is the underlying cause of mass irregular migration. The boats will not be completely stopped unless we reverse the lack of opportunity and insecurity in countries around the world.
