Australia recorded its coldest temperature of the year overnight, with the chill coinciding with yet another stretch of heavy rain and flooding threats for Sydney and much of the east coast. According to 9News, at Thredbo Top Station, located 1957 metres above sea level in the New South Wales Snowy Mountains, the mercury plunged to –13 degrees Celsius. Weatherzone reported that the extreme drop resulted from a rare, perfectly still winter night, marking the nation’s coldest reading of 2025 by more than three degrees. The icy low was the coldest recorded in New South Wales since 2018 and the lowest nationwide since –13.5 degrees was registered at Liawenee, on Tasmania’s Central Plateau, on July 4, 2024. While ski resorts shivered, Sydney endured a much milder but still chilly night with temperatures dipping below seven degrees. The city now faces another week of unrelenting rain, with showers forecast until at least Sunday. Meteorologists warn of the potential for heavy falls and flooding across the east coast, with a slim chance of snow in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland; regions that already saw a light dusting earlier this month. The forecast comes just days after Sydney experienced its wettest August weekend in almost three decades. More than 80 millimetres of rain fell across the city;just over what is typically expected for the entire month, making it the wettest August weekend since 1998, according to Weatherzone. Western Australia is also preparing for a soaking. The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted up to 80 millimetres of rain across the south-west of the state, including as much as 40 millimetres in Perth on Tuesday and Wednesday.
