Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has refused to rule out dropping captain Bruno Fernandes for Sunday's Premier League clash against Bournemouth, as pressure mounts following a difficult run of results.
Carrick delivered an emotional address lasting five minutes and 30 seconds during Friday's pre-match press conference, making it clear that the club's interests must come before individual players.
United are enduring a difficult period, having gone seven games without a win. Their struggles deepened on Wednesday after suffering a 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League, raising further questions about Carrick's leadership and tactical approach.
Tensions have also emerged within the club, with defender Lisandro Martinez criticising the hierarchy and Fernandes expressing dissatisfaction with Carrick's tactics following the defeat in Italy.
Addressing the situation, Carrick admitted that the team's recent performances had fallen below the standards expected at Manchester United.
“Wednesday was a bad night, and it hurt me to see us play like that. It was unacceptable,” Carrick said.
The United boss insisted that his responsibility was to build a team capable of representing the club's identity and giving supporters something to be proud of.
He also stressed that humility, resilience and hard work must remain central to the club's culture.
“Entitlement cannot be at this football club,” Carrick added, warning that those values must not be lost.
Asked directly whether Fernandes could be dropped against Bournemouth, Carrick avoided ruling out the possibility, emphasising that his decisions would be guided by what benefits the team.
“The most important thing for me is the team, the squad and dynamics in the squad,” he said. “It's about the football club. I'll always do what is best for the football club.”
Fernandes' potential absence from the starting line-up would be a significant decision, given his role as captain, but Carrick's comments suggest that no player is guaranteed a place as Manchester United seek to turn their season around.
All eyes will now be on Sunday's encounter at Old Trafford, where United will look to respond on the pitch while Carrick attempts to restore confidence, discipline and unity within the squad.
