Cristiano Ronaldo has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing an extraordinary 23-year journey with Portugal to an end and closing one of the most remarkable chapters in modern football history.

The 41-year-old forward made the announcement on Thursday, November 5, 2026, through an emotional farewell message shared on Instagram, confirming that he was ready to hand over Portugal's iconic number 7 shirt to the next generation.

Ronaldo leaves behind an extraordinary record of 234 appearances and 146 goals, making him the most-capped player and leading goalscorer in men's international football.

His international journey began in August 2003, when he made his debut at just 18 years old. His greatest achievement came in 2016, when he captained Portugal to its first-ever UEFA European Championship title after defeating France 1–0 in the final.

He also helped Portugal win the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2019 and secured another title in 2025.

His retirement follows recent tensions with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus over his playing time. Ronaldo had reportedly been frustrated after being left on the bench against Norway and later left the national team's training camp after learning he would not start against Denmark.

In his farewell message, Ronaldo reflected on the journey, acknowledging the victories, disappointments and mistakes while expressing pride in representing his country.

"For 23 years I had the privilege and responsibility of wearing it, defending it and carrying it with me into stadiums all around the world," he said.

The Portuguese Football Federation has expressed its desire to organise a fitting tribute to celebrate his contribution to the national team.

Ronaldo's decision concerns international football only; his club career with Al-Nassr is separate.

146 goals. 234 appearances. Three major international trophies. Twenty-three years representing Portugal.

The number 7 shirt will eventually belong to another player, but Ronaldo's legacy will remain part of Portuguese football history.
