Billionaire Elon Musk faces growing political uncertainty ahead of the November 3, 2026, US midterm elections, with Democrats forecast to make significant gains and potentially regain control of the House of Representatives.
Musk, the chief executive of Tesla and SpaceX, has become the biggest known donor to Republican groups during this election cycle, contributing approximately $442 million, according to ABC News. At least $158 million has reportedly gone towards a closely contested Senate race in Texas, where Republican candidate Ken Paxton faces Democratic challenger James Talarico.
Democrats hope to capitalise on declining approval ratings for President Donald Trump and growing dissatisfaction with the Republican administration.
Potential Investigations
A Democratic victory could give the party greater authority to investigate Musk's business dealings and government activities, including his former involvement with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
During its approximately 10-month existence, DOGE oversaw extensive federal workforce reductions and faced allegations concerning access to sensitive government data and the withholding of funds approved by Congress.
Democratic lawmakers have also raised concerns about reports that Ukraine experienced restrictions affecting its access to SpaceX's Starlink and Starshield communications services. Musk and Trump have denied responsibility for the reported restrictions.
If Democrats gain control of congressional committees, they could summon Musk to testify, demand documents and investigate potential conflicts of interest involving his companies and federal contracts.
Business Interests at Stake
Musk's companies depend on significant government contracts, particularly in space exploration and defence. Increased congressional scrutiny could therefore create financial and reputational challenges.
Harry Melkonian, an honorary associate at the United States Studies Centre, told ABC News that Congress could ultimately restrict future government spending on contracts involving Musk's companies.
Musk has responded defiantly to discussions about potential investigations, warning on X that those who challenge him could face retaliation.
With the elections approaching, the outcome could reshape Washington's political balance and determine the extent of scrutiny facing Musk. For the billionaire, the stakes extend beyond political influence to the future of his government relationships and business interests.
