Billionaire Elon Musk has announced the creation of a new political movement, the America Party, escalating an increasingly personal feud with US President Donald Trump and positioning himself as a force challenging the nation’s entrenched two-party system. While Musk is ineligible to run for the White House himself having been born in South Africa he has yet to say who the America Party might nominate as its figurehead. Nor is it clear whether the organization has completed the necessary filings with the Federal Election Commission to operate as an official party.   Musk revealed the initiative on Saturday in a post to his social media platform, X, declaring that the America Party would “give you back your freedom” from what he described as a “one-party system” addicted to “waste and graft.” “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party, and you shall have it!” Musk wrote, referencing a poll he ran earlier this year that suggested broad public frustration with Republicans and Democrats alike. The announcement follows weeks of public acrimony between Musk and Trump, once close allies. Until recently, Musk had been one of Trump’s most visible backers, appearing with him at campaign rallies and donating $250 million to support his return to office. After Trump’s election victory, Musk was appointed to lead the Department of Government Efficiency nicknamed “Doge”,tasked with slashing federal spending. But the relationship soured spectacularly this spring after Musk resigned his government post in protest over Trump’s signature tax and spending legislation, which critics say will balloon the deficit by over $3 trillion in the next decade. Musk has also been frustrated by the bill’s lack of provisions supporting clean energy or electric vehicles, a cornerstone of his business empire. In response, Trump took to Truth Social to accuse Musk of hypocrisy, claiming, “Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far… Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa.” The president also hinted that Doge would investigate federal contracts and subsidies benefiting Musk’s companies, including Tesla, SpaceX, and Starlink. Historically, third-party candidates have struggled to break through in US politics. Movements like the Libertarian Party and the Green Party have attracted national attention but failed to mount a serious challenge to the Republican and Democratic nominees. Still, Musk appears determined to channel the discontent he has stirred online into a formal political movement. “Today,” he wrote, “the America Party is formed to give Americans a real choice.”
