Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is reportedly leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to guide its aggressive cost-cutting initiatives, aiming to reduce the federal budget deficit by at least $1 trillion. However, this approach has sparked significant concerns among AI experts, public policy analysts, and government officials, who warn that using AI in such high-stakes decision-making could lead to biased layoffs, security risks, and the loss of essential government personnel. Several media reports indicate that Musk’s DOGE team is utilizing AI to accelerate budget cuts, a move reminiscent of his cost-cutting strategies during the Twitter takeover in 2022. Back then, massive layoffs and spending reductions led to technical failures, lawsuits, and a decline in user experience. Experts now fear that applying the same approach to government agencies could result in far more severe consequences. David Evan Harris, a former AI researcher at Meta’s Responsible AI team, cautioned against the risks of using AI to determine government staffing and budget reductions. “It runs a massive risk of violating people’s civil rights,” he told CNN. Similarly, John Hatton, staff vice president of policy and programs at the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, emphasized the dangers of AI-driven government downsizing, stating, “You do that in the federal government, and people may die.” Under Musk’s leadership, DOGE has already overseen the elimination of key agencies, including the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which played a crucial role in humanitarian efforts. Thousands of federal employees have reportedly been dismissed, raising concerns about the stability of critical government operations. Management experts have criticized Musk’s approach as reckless and politically risky. According to a report from Business Insider, some have compared his cost-cutting methods to those of “Chainsaw” Al Dunlap, a corporate downsizer infamous for prioritizing rapid financial cuts over long-term stability. Beyond job cuts, the integration of AI in government restructuring poses ethical and security challenges. Experts warn that AI-driven decision-making can amplify existing biases, leading to discriminatory hiring and firing practices. Furthermore, the lack of transparency in AI recommendations makes it difficult to hold decision-makers accountable. A report from Harvard University’s AI Ethics Program highlights the dangers of unregulated AI in government: “AI systems, if improperly designed, can reinforce biases, undermine democratic principles, and pose risks to privacy and security.” Additionally, recent Trump administration policies rolling back AI safety regulations have left U.S. workers increasingly vulnerable to AI-driven employment decisions. According to The Guardian, labor experts warn that these deregulations prioritize rapid AI expansion at the expense of worker rights and job security. Despite Musk’s claims of saving billions, DOGE’s financial reporting has faced criticism. A recent New York Magazine investigation found that the team’s “wall of receipts”, a public display of reported savings, had to remove 40% of listed contracts due to miscalculations and duplicate entries. The errors have raised questions about the reliability of Musk’s budget-cutting figures and the effectiveness of AI in financial oversight. While AI has the potential to improve government efficiency, its unregulated use in cost-cutting and staffing decisions presents serious risks. The current approach by DOGE, marked by rapid layoffs and the elimination of key agencies, has drawn widespread criticism. Experts argue that a more transparent and ethical AI framework is needed to ensure that technological advancements support governance rather than dismantle it. Source : New York Magazine
