India has taken strong action against Pakistan just one day after gunmen killed 26 people at a popular tourist spot in Indian-administered Kashmir. The deadly attack took place in the peaceful town of Pahalgam, known as a favorite holiday destination. The Indian government blames a group called the Kashmir Resistance for the shooting, although this has not yet been confirmed. Most of the victims were Hindu men, but a local Muslim man also died. Witnesses described chaos as families ran for their lives. "We cannot get over the fact that such an incident has occurred, and that too in the place we call heaven on earth,”said Akib Chaya, a local hotel owner. The Indian government has reacted with anger and urgency. According to BBC News, there are measures announced include: - Shutting down the main border crossing with Pakistan   - Expelling Pakistani diplomats and military advisers   - Suspending a key 1960 water-sharing treaty   - Ordering some Pakistani visa holders to leave India within 48 hours Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on X: “Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice. Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakable and it will get even stronger.” India and Pakistan have long had a tense relationship, mostly over the disputed region of Kashmir. Both countries claim it fully but only control parts. They have fought wars over the territory since gaining independence in 1947. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh warned that India’s response would not be limited to those who carried out the attack. "We will not only reach those who have perpetrated this incident but also those who, sitting behind the scenes, have conspired to commit such acts on the soil of India,”he said. Pakistan has denied any involvement. Its Foreign Ministry expressed sympathy for the victims and said it was “concerned at the loss of tourists’ lives.” A top-level National Security Council meeting is set to take place in Islamabad. India’s suspension of the Indus Water Treaty is one of the most serious steps taken so far. This agreement, in place for over 60 years, controls how the rivers of the Indus system are shared between India and Pakistan. Breaking this deal could affect millions of people. International leaders have condemned the attack, and there has been widespread mourning across India. Many fear this tragedy could cause another major clash between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. The search for the gunmen continues.
