Seven-time Formula One world champion Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton has said that Rwanda is one of the places in Africa where he could imagine living, praising the country’s beauty and culture after visiting the continent. Speaking ahead of the new Formula One season, Hamilton reflected on his travels across Africa and singled out Rwanda and Kenya as destinations that left a strong impression on him. “The places I’ve enjoyed the most, I loved Kenya,” Hamilton said, before adding that Rwanda in particular stood out. “Rwanda was particularly spectacular. Those are two places I felt like I could live.” Hamilton has been an outspoken advocate for bringing Formula One back to Africa, noting that the continent is the only inhabited region in the world without a race on the current F1 calendar. The last African race was the South African Grand Prix held at the Kyalami Circuit in 1993. Since then, the sport has expanded across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas. Hamilton said he has been working behind the scenes for several years to push for an African Grand Prix before he retires from the sport. “For the past six or seven years I’ve been asking the question: why are we not in Africa?” he said, adding that he hopes to race on the continent during his career. Rwanda has been mentioned among potential candidates to host a future Formula One race, alongside South Africa. Officials in Kigali have previously expressed interest in building a modern circuit near the country’s new international airport. Hamilton believes a race in Africa would help showcase the continent’s potential and attract tourism while expanding the global reach of the sport. “I don’t want to leave the sport without having a Grand Prix there,” he said, underscoring his long-standing campaign to bring Formula One back to the continent. The British driver, who often speaks about reconnecting with his African heritage, has visited several African countries and described the continent as one of the most beautiful places in the world. His admiration for Rwanda follows earlier visits where he experienced the country’s culture, landscapes and wildlife, including trekking mountain gorillas in national parks. For Hamilton, the hope of racing in Africa remains both professional and personal.
