A major arterial road in Sydney has been completely closed, triggering significant traffic disruption, due to concerns that a massive crane may topple. Pennant Hills Road has been shut down between Marsden and Jenkins Roads in Carlingford after a crane detached from its mounting support on Wednesday afternoon, prompting an emergency response. Images from the scene show the crane’s upper structure [commonly referred to as the "arm"] dangling horizontally, in stark contrast to surrounding cranes with their arms positioned upright.

In a statement, NSW Police confirmed the road closure was implemented “due to a hazard.” “Local diversions are in place. Motorists should follow the directions of police and traffic crews on site. Motorists should also allow extra travel time,” a police spokesperson said. The disruption is also affecting public transport. “Local buses are also diverting away from Pennant Hills Road, missing several stops.” the spokesperson said and added that “some buses may also be delayed.”
